Matthew Jankes is a filmmaker born and raised in South Africa. He studied film through the University of Cape Town and the South African School of Motion Picture Medium (AFDA), training in writing, directing and cinematography. In between making short films he directs, shoots and edits music videos. In 2010 he was part of the Africa First program helmed by Focus Features. The resulting film, Umkhungo (The Gift), was released in 2011. His 208 film, Axis Mundi, co-directed with Sean Steinberg won Best Film, Best Director and Best Script at the 2018 Silwerskerm Festival.
