Biography

Ethiopia

Olisarali Olibui grew up in remote Mursiland where, after seeing westerners with cameras, he realized that filmmaking was a way of showing the world Mursi culture. He was sent to Australia by the local mission to learn English and this skill gave him the means to pursue his interest. He began started documenting his tribe activities on video. Olibui wanted to use the camera to make a record of Mursi life and customs and to film neighboring groups for a Mursi audience. He believed this would help to bring peace through better understanding. His brother, Milisha, said: “Oli is the first Mursi to use a camera. We wanted to make a film to show our culture because, in future, it may disappear.” Olibui met a journalist, Peter Moszynski, who introduced him to film maker Ben Young. Together they made the film, Shooting with Mursi.
