A documentary film about the Candomblé spiritual tradition in Bahia, Brazil, a vibrant African-derived culture which evolved from slavery’s brutal past. Elder women leaders tell stories of Candomblé’s history, social challenges and triumphs, grounded in strong community, and Earth-based wisdom and practice.

About the Director

Donna C. Roberts

Biography: Donna Roberts is a producer/director with an M.S. in Environmental Science. Prior to Yemanjá: Wisdom from the African Heart of Brazil, Donna directed the award-winning documentary Sea of Uncertainty about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. While living in Brazil, she produced a documentary for PeaceWomen Brazil (Mulheres pela Paz), about its campaign to end domestic violence in that country. Her focus is on the work of Brazilian women socio-environmental educators/activists, to add their voices to global environmental education.
