Cheick Fantamady Camara was born in Conakry, Guinea, in 1960. He studied screenwriting at the French Audiovisual National Institute, and subsequently filmmaking at the École Nationale Supérieure Louis Lumière in Paris, France. He made his first short film, Konorofili (Anxiety) in 2000, followed by Bè Kunko (Everybody’s Problem) in 2004. In 2006, he made his first feature film, Clouds over Conakry (Il va pleuvoir sur Conakry), which received numerous international distinctions, including the People’s Choice Award at FESPACO 2007. In 2012, he released the film Morbayassa (the name of a traditional dance). Camara passed away in January 2017, at the age of 57.
