Riva, a small time operator returns to Kinshasa with a fortune and hijacked gasoline, after being away for a decade. He is soon entranced by beautiful night club denizen, Nora, the kept woman of a local gangster. Djo Tunda Wa Munga's Kinshasa is a seductively vibrant, lawless, fuel-starved sprawl of shantytowns, gated villas, bordellos and nightclubs and Riva is its perfect embodiment.

About the Director

Djo Tunda Wa Munga

Djo Tunda Wa Munga was born in 1972 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. He went to the National Film School of Belgium, INSAS in his early twenties. After living in Europe, he returned to the DRC and established a film production company dedicated to training young filmmakers. He has directed several medium-length documentaries, including Horizon en transition (2005) and the acclaimed documentary State of Mind (2010). He produced Congo in Four Acts in 2009 (a series of films which are the first DRC-directed documentaries) which premiered at the Berlinale in 2010 and has screened at over 50 festivals to date. His feature film debut Viva Riva! (2010) premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2010 and Berlinale in 2011. The film won six African Movie Academy Awards and MTV’s first Best African Movie award. He has been named the African Trailblazer for 2010 by MIPTV. Learn More
